Remote water quality monitoring and intelligence

Internet of Things

REWARDING will set up the infrastructure for in-situ, remote water quality monitoring. The connected IoT system will consist of at least two floating buoys with built-in sensors, connected via a wide-area IoT network for real-time remote access. The system will also use drones capable of water sampling, to increase the spatial coverage, and serve as a relay for buoys to address the cases when the cellular network performance is degraded. This system developed in WP1 will enable solutions for ML-based Data Processing at Edge/Cloud in WP3 and Water Quality Monitoring, Prediction and Alerting in WP4.

Water Quality Data Collection

Selection of the real-time monitoring sites will be conducted in WP2 using the multi-criteria analysis of the existing, current, and historical, water quality and quantity datasets collected in WP1. Water quality will be monitored and predicted using the novel improved water quality index (WQI) defined in WP4 using a simple and accessible aggregation formula. The result will be a value on the 0-100 scale, indicating higher scores to a better water quality. The corresponding alerting will be blue (good water quality status), green (moderate water quality status), yellow (fair water quality status), orange (poor water quality status) and red alert (very poor water quality status).

Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence

A state-of-the-art ML-based Data Processing at Edge/Cloud will be deployed to analyse the water quality data from the installed multi-sensors. The AI water quality prediction will be established at the sensor measuring sites as well as within different river sections using data from drones and satellite data. Water quality analysis and prediction will be integrated into the web-oriented client application, to support water quality alerting during the deteriorated river stream health.
